Malaga was until May the fourth airport in the country used by budget airlines, with 1.3 million passengers, representing a decline of 5.5%, according to the Institute of Tourism Studies (IET).
Ahead of Malaga airport are situated Barcelona-El Prat with 2.4 million passengers; Madrid-Barajas with 1.4 million and Palma de Mallorca with 1.7 million passengers.
The low cost airlines carried 12.5 million passengers in the first five months of the year, representing a decline of 0.6% over the same period last year. Traditional companies moved 9.7 million passengers, which represents a 2% less. Thus, the low cost airlines accounted for more than half of air traffic until May, with 56.3%, compared to the traditional airlines, which transported 43.7% of the travellers. UK and Germany lead the flights to the Costa del Sol on low cost airlines.
